Sadly that seems to be the case in most areas that I know of. I believe very few sifu seem willing to teach westerners, so the Chinese styls aren't as accesible as their Japenese or Korean counterparts. Unfortunately the more accesible styles in the United States seem very watered down even compared to the same styles taught in Asia.  I've recently heard of a group in Chicago that'ts trying to recreate medieval martial arts. They are combining Savate kickboxing, Fisticuffs, Cornish Wrestling, and Cornish Stick fighting as well as swordplay. I don't know what, if anything, it will amount to but seems pretty interesting.

I only heard of it in kung fu movies.  Sadly, kung fu is a style I have not been able to practice for lack of a good instructor in my area.

Is anyone familiar with "Three Sisters" Kung Fu? Basically it's three styles of internal martial arts combined. You might have heard of each one individually. Chen style Tai chi Chuan, Baqua Zhang, and Hising I.

That is what American Freestyle Karate is.  Just like the U.S. did with innovation and people, it takes the best parts of other techniques and makes them into a whole new style.  It differs from just a mix martial arts in that it adopts the traditions and customs, philosophy and weapons.

I would recommend anyone in the pagan community take a martial arts class.  As a teen I did Ta Kwan Do and now do a freestyle karate, incorporating moves from different styles.  You will learn how to breathe, meditate, move and develop mental as well as physical strength.  Age, weight or size does not matter.
