I did a search on the net... the only thing I could remember on my own was from childhood when we would nick each others finger then touch the bleeding wounds together. And that is basically what blood oaths are!
I will abbreviate what I found. In ancient times men would make a cut on their forearms then bind their wounds together so that their blood would mingle. Or they would make a cut on their arms then let some of it drop into wine and each person would drink each others:

"In modern times, a common blood brother ceremony includes having each person make a small cut, usually on a finger or the forearm, and then the two cuts are pressed together and bound, the idea being that each person's blood now flows in the other participant's veins. This is considered medically inadvisable due to the risk of blood-borne diseases."

The purpose was to "bind oneself to the other person" Sorry.. that is all I could find.
