i have been smoking since i was nine- yes, nine. I was suicidal and saw it as another way to kill myself. i found the craft when i was 15 and discovered the Harm None, rule. I stopped cutting myself and the like, but i couldn't stop smoking. now i am 23 and still smoking. it just has become who i am now. Do you believe that harm none includes smoking cigarettes and why. I am very curious as to what you all think.

people do things for there own reason a few of my wiccan family memebers smoke and have been in the craft for over like 40 years or so. sometimes cigarttes can be bad to you, but my grandmother and father have been smoking since they were like 15 and there lungs are perfect, the dr toldme if your going to get lung cancer your going to get it even if you dont smoke, it's all in the person.
What an interesting topic and concept to introduce! I do believe in freedom of choice, however, personally I wish you would quit. As the others before me said, you don't know if you are resistent to cancer. You also don't know if those around you are resistent. For myself, both my parents smoked and growing up I had bronchitis every year and allergy problems all the time. Now, my husband and I both don't smoke and I have 3 cats, a not so pristine household and I rarely have colds, bronchitis or allergy problems. Did their smoking contribute? I think so. Also, I have a lot of difficulty breathing in a smoke filled room and can't stay in it for long. So, does this fall under "Harm None"? For me, I guess it does. Good Luck with your choice whatever it may be!
The 'an it harm none' rule has been really blown too far out of proportion, imho. It originally meant any direct and malicious harm as in going out of your way to harm another. I personally wouldn't count smoking in that category. If you look at it like this, even eating certain fatty foods is 'harming' yourself by building up plaque in the arteries...even LIVING one more day is 'harming' as you're bringing your body closer to dying...breathing too much if you live in a city is 'harming' yourself as you're breathing in smog and pollution...not vacuuming the floors often enough is 'harming' yourself with dust and germs...so where does it end really?
I have been wondering the same thing, lately. I think that Torey has a valid point- just living in the times that we do, we are constantly subjected to unhealthy things that are out of our control, like UV rays, for example. I am eighteen, and I have been smoking for 2 years. I have just recently started formally studying Wicca (about three months ago), and for a moment, I thought about quitting, because smoking didn't seem to be in accordance with the Harm None rule. The thing is, I really enjoy smoking. I decided not to quit out of selfishness, I suppose. As for cutting, I used to cut as well; cutting is a very destructive coping mechanism. I think that smoking is a personal choice; I don't smoke to cope, I smoke for the love of it. The only cigarettes I smoke are Djarum Black Clove Cigarettes, and American Spirits, both of which have no additives. 100% pure tobacco. Obviously, they are still cigarettes, but it is quite a lot healthier, and less addictive. Hold the rat poison, please. :D I think that with moderation, smoking is fine. It's meant to be an indulgence; a treat. I'm so glad someone else was curious about this, too! I hope my insight has provided some clarity. Blessed Be!
thank you so much for your opinion everybody. i think i am going to go out and buy a pack of those American Spirits Autumn was talking about. that way, i did sometthing! i, too, love to smoke and cant honestly picture myself not. And thank you also Autumn for admitting that you too, once cut. it made me feel less vulerable. i used to cut to.... make the hurt inside match my outsides and noone else understands unless you have been there.

thank you Torey! that made me think of things in a whole new way. i love how you thing "out of the box" so to speak. its very refreshing!

thank you everybody!!! :)
Hey there,
Had to weigh in again. Maybe saying that smoking should be held up to the "Harm None" rule IS a little extreme, but smoking IS something you can control. Same with what you eat and how you live (cleanliness, safely, etc). So, Torey, while you made a valid point, you lost me with the rest. We can't control the air we breath, but we CAN try to make a difference in trying to control pollution. Basically it's a matter of choice. If you wish to harm none, then you don't drink and drive. If you wish to not harm yourself, then you make sure your parachute works before you jump out of the plane. If you wish to not affect yourself or others with carcinogens then you quit smoking. I am mildly obese, I understand that it's unhealthy. therefore I am dieting - do I love chocolate, cake, donuts? YOU BET!!!!! But I've made a choice to protect my body. Will I die of heart disease? Diabetes? Who knows? But why take a chance? So, Jade, good luck. You made a choice to go to more natural cigarettes and that's a good start.
i jest ouit the smoking it hell but the patch helps i have been cewing the gum look jest cut down and mack a plan to quit yes people have to breath in the sconed hand smoke but look it not as bad as black magic
